San Juan Capistrano is an area with a story to tell. The city is the oldest in Orange County, with a timeline going back to 1776 when Father Junipero Serra established Mission San Juan Capistrano. Many landmarks dot the city, which strives to ensure their preservation and works hard to tell their stories to the public. The Los Rios Historic District is one of the oldest continuing neighborhoods in Orange County and includes 31 structures. Three adobe homes built in 1794 still stand today. The O’Neill Museum is a great place to visit to learn more about the history of the area and learn about the people who first called San Juan Capistrano home.
In addition to priding itself in an abundance of early history, San Juan Capistrano is also the equestrian capital of the west coast and is dedicated to preserving open spaces. Residents can find a large number of stables and boarding facilities here, which draw many people who are looking to relocate. Nearby trails and beautiful scenery make it a great place to get outside and ride. Those who prefer to explore the outdoors by hiking or biking can find plenty of trails as well.
When looking for amenities and things to do, downtown San Juan Capistrano is truly the heart of the city. There are many shops, dining opportunities, and the year round Downtown Farmer’s Market. Every Wednesday, all residents can find fresh flowers, amazing produce, and delicious specialty foods to take back to their home. The market runs from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. November through March and 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. April through October.
